This work shows the artist’s attempt to understand how the soul of a person is connected to the expansive external world. Sinha’s personal journey is reflected in the sculptures and choice of technique—wood-fired and reduction-cooled ceramics that come from firing techniques passed down across generations. Having been a part of art residencies and studios worldwide, she has trained and worked with artists such as Neil Hoffman, Peter Thompson, Robert Barron, etc. The glaze in each of the sculptures portrays various flame and ash patterns, appearing as if galaxies have been encapsulated in DNA-like forms—an amalgamation of moments when one felt most alive. The scattering of glowing spots invites us to lean into the spirituality of the piece and surrender to the randomness of nature.
The title “6 AB Cascade & 6 BA Cascade” references the bio-chemical cascade, nodding to both the natural world and human understanding of it. The cascade’s branching pathways are characterised by interconnected parts, just like the sculptures, speaking to our interconnectedness with each other and nature. The bio-chemical structure is fundamental to life processes such as cell growth and the ability to respond to external stimuli, making this work of art a visual metaphor for inevitable changes and resilience. It leaves us with a sense of hope, possibly with a cheeky hidden reference to the cascade algorithm—a mathematical method to find the shortest distance between pairs of vertices. Even in troubling and twisted times, humans have a way of surprising and finding each other to provide solace to the soul.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Antra Sinha is an artist from Delhi who earned her MFA in painting from the University of Baroda and a second MFA with a STEM scholarship in ceramics from the Utah State University. Her oeuvre expresses the significant relationship between natural geometry and manmade structures, specifically architecture. Her work is unique and diverse, with a remarkable practice in wood kiln firings, clay work and wheel-throwing. Currently, she has her own kiln design and ceramic studio called Earth Art in Pondicherry, India.
Sinha is a well-established artist, educator, curator and community member, both nationally and internationally. She was an apprentice to Ray Meeker for ten years at the Golden Bridge Pottery in Pondicherry, where she helped build India’s first Anagama kiln in the GBP studio. She received the prestigious JENESYS grant from the Japan Foundation, a Multicultural Fellowship from the NCECA (2015), and was awarded the Caine College of the Arts Master Researcher of the Year (2017). Currently, she is a member of three ceramic organisations- the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts, the University for the Creative Arts, and the Indian Ceramics Triennale.
